3 Data collections

All data are collected through online responseive questionnaires. The surveys are administered through the software Confirmit Horizons.

How survey respondents access the survey, depends on how they are contacted. In all postal mail communication, the respondents are referred to trygghetsundersokelsen.no. From there, they can access the survey by providing their unique login code printed in the invitational letter.

In emails and text messages, respondents received a personal, clickable URL directing them to their personal questionnaire. However, some respondents might be sceptical of clicking an URL. Therefore, trygghetsundersokelsen.no and the personal login was repeated in the email and text messages along with the personal URL.

Online questionnaires are ideal for routing the respondents based on their answers. For most of the crime categories, follow-up questions were asked. Respondents exposed for violence, sexual violence or digital sexual violence, were asked more follow-up questions than respondents exposed to theft, robbery, burglary, or web-based crime.

For most event based questions in the survey, the respondents are asked about events taken place in the previous year. Round 1 fielded in 2021, asked about events in 2020. Round 2 fielded in 2023, asked about events in 2022, etc. If the respondent is exposed to multiple types of sexual violence, we limit the set of follow-up questions in order to reduce response burden.

All questionnaires are tested extensively before they are fielded

To protect the respondents privacy, the questionnaire does not permit navigation backwards. If anyone unauthorized gain access to the respondents login credentials, it is not possible to view the survey responses. In addition, it is not possible to access a completed questionnaire. Not even for the authorized respondents, who needs to contact support in order to change their original answers.

3.1 Round 1 (2021)

The 68 000 respondents (main sample and sub-sample) were contacted in three different ways, depending on the individual respondents available information:

  • Postal letter to residential address
  • By email
  • Text message send to registered mobile number

Postal address was collected from the population registry, Email-address and mobile number is collected from The common contact register (KRR). Of the 68 000, 4 720 were not registered with a mobile number. 5 065 respondents were not registered with an email address. In total, 4 647 individuals did not have either. Consequently, they could only be contacted by postal mail.
